The use of American Sign Language (ASL) has been growing in mainstream theater in recent years. Most recently, DeafWest’s production of Spring Awakening made waves by showing ASL to a new generation on the Broadway stage. Join Deaf actor Joe Ronan (Mother Hicks, Taste of Sunrise), interpreter Diane Gamse, and hearing actor and ASL student Colby Trembley for a masterclass on ASL in the Arts. The masterclass will include a question and answer portion, teaching of the ASL alphabet, a discussion on how scripts or songs are converted into ASL and the learning of a song in ASL.

This masterclass will go over the basic structure and physiology of the voice, teach basic therapeutic exercises and vocal behavior therapy exercises. The session will cover how to warm up a group - what is a technical warmup; how to help singers prepare the voice for the kind of sound you are looking for in your show, concert or choir. Instruction will include Posture and breath work, VBT, how to achieve the right
overtones, Chest dominant mix or head dominant mix sound quality and classical sound quality.
